I can give you some help on this.

1) Make a new image of whatever size you want it to be.
2) Open up all of the images you want to blend together.
3) Take two of the images you want, and add them as layers to the first image you created.
4) Place them how you wish them, with one of them on top of the other, having it overlap.
5) Make sure you are on the top layer. Right click, and go to Layer->Mask->Add Layer Mask.
6) Choose the mask you wish to use (I normally use Layer's Alpha Channel it seems to work best for me.)
7) Click Ok.
8 ) Now that you have added a layer mask select the gradient tool. Move it in the direction you wish for the two images to blend (EG, left to right, right to left, top to bottom etc.)
9) Once you have done that, the two images should be blended together. If you don't like how it worked, undo (Ctrl+Z) and re-do step 8.
10) Once you have achieved the blend that you want, go to Layer->Merge Down. Doing this will make the two layers merge together.
11) Add another image to be blended, and repeat from step 4. Continue doing this until you have all of the images you want blended.

That's how I blend in GIMP. If you have any troubles, or need some more clarification, let me know and I'll try to help you some more.
